H.266 is coming out and like H.265 does the same quality at half the data rate
So the H.266 video compression standard has been announced, and just like H.265 it again cuts the data rate by half while keeping the same quality, which is very impressive.
And this will be great for video streaming and camera compression and the like, but once again it is going to be very processor intensive, and from what I have seen not many people are even using H.265 because it is so processor intensive both on compression side and playback side, and H.266 will be so much more processor intensive.
Better compression for video is always a good thing, but it will be a while before anyone sees any benefits from this.

EOSHD on H.264 Codec, ProRes 4444 Quality at 1% of File SIze
EOSHD has an article on the new h.265 Codec which is ProRes 4444 Quality at 1% of the File size. Of course i doesn’t talk about the computer power that is going to be needed. And that is going to need some power. Serious GPU power I am thinking.
Still you can try it right now with Cinemartin’s compressor, but it is not cheap! And the compressor is made for Windows 7, and I have no idea what will actually play it back right now, but the compressor also does ProRes. Would love to give it a try, but it is way too expensive to play with right now.
H.265 video codec gets ITU Approval
Maximum PC is reporting that H.265 has been given the ITU approval. This codec will cut bandwidth requirements in half for video streaming,t hough will also require much more power to uncompress. This will be great for portable devices as well as 4K, as you can have the same quality as H.264 in half the size.
Sorenson Media on the coming H.265 Standard
Sorenson Media has an interesting article on the upcoming video compression standard H.265. It is supposed to double the efficiency of H.264, though with likely a higher processor hit. And that means half the size for the same quality, which is huge especially for bandwidth caps and the like. Of course it might also mean new Apple TV’s and ROKU’s to take advantage, as well as new iPhone’s and iPad’s too. The processor hit I am sure is enormous.
Still can’t wait to see that new quality.
