Adobe has redesigned the Premiere Pro workplace switcher again and it is better than their last version

Francis-Crossman an adobe employee has posted a discussion for the Premiere Pro Beta on the Workspace Switcher Improvements in the header bar.

It is certainly an improvement to their upgrade which was going to hide workspaces behind multiple clicks, while this allows for single click to your favorite workspaces.

This new version is not the default which just shows the active worksapce, but if you click and select show workspace.

You can now scroll through workspaces or edit workspaces to edit which ones show.

Certainly an improvement from hiding workspaces completely, I still am not sure about the new header bar, which seems to make import and export more important than the meat of editing itself, butt this is at least an improvement.

Worried about the future of Premiere Pro development when Adobe keeps telling me that by making things take more clicks it is actually better

Starting with the Adobe Premiere Pro beta and it’s redesigned header bar, which their is a discussion on about at the Adobe Support Community for Premiere Pro Beta.

Where adobe moved the workspaces to under a single button with no display for what workspace you are in. And when us users gave feedback their seemed to be a fight back.

Ann (and everyone else) – I hear you about the change in muscle memory and requiring 2 clicks instead of one. I really do empathize – change is hard. I was an editor for 10 years before joing the software game and the placement of buttons is cemented in my brain. I too didn’t like the workspaces in the dropdown menu at first. But I have been using it now for a few months (yes I still edit constantly) and I’ve found that I prefer the menu dropdown. It’s a much better use of space, a cleaner look, and you can see all your workspaces at once without needing the overflow menu. I ask that you give it a chance and push past the innitial discomfort and really try this new arrangement. Also remember that this is not the end of the road. And getting reactions like this is exactly why we put it in beta first before just releasing and forcing it upon everyone.

This was my first instance of Adobe telling me that more than one click was better than one click (and in this case wasting space and not displaying the current workspace). Now in this instance at least Adobe seems to have relented and is going to allow us to display 3 workspaces in the title bar, though not by default.

And then at the Facebook Premiere Pro Editors user group, which I have subsequently left since my posts had links to this blog and I was told users didn’t like that, and I my tone had to be calmer and more deferential to Adobe employees who post on it, when posting about the now completely changed methods for dealing with the damn (see that is what would piss them off) ALEXA AMIRA LUT, I was told the new method was faster, when it takes more clicks, so obviously it is not.

Previously I could select all my footage and right click and Disable Master Clips. Now I have to right click go to drop down menu and select Interpret Footage, then in the subsequent dialogue go down to color man agement and select the Embedded AMIRA LUT drop down menu and then select none. IN NO WAY IS THAT FASTER THAN BEING ABLE TO TURN IT OFF FROM THE DROP DOWN MENU.

Now the first example they fixed after user feedback. The second is part of a re-designed Color Management System, that doesn’t seem to be documented at all by Adobe as of yet (boy they could learn something from Black Magic Designs about manuals especially for release versions, ha again something that would have gotten me reprimanded by the Premier Pro Editors User Group) and my questions on it were pulled from the group, so I deleted them, which is why Adobe employees should just be interacting on their own web site, and not in places where people unaffiliated with Adobe are removing posts because of tone or linking to content not on Facebook (if you at all read this site, you see I do long posts with many images, so there is no way I could do the same in a facebook post), so there is no chance for Adobe to comment or users to share their opinion and maybe get things changed.

And it does worry me that in both situations the Adobe employees told us that the new methods were faster, when they are demonstrably not. They are working on a slow but full rework of Premiere Pro, and it is statements like this that worry me the most. They think their new way is better and faster, and just implement something slower.

I mean why didn’t the whole Color Management change show up in the Beta? It just showed up in the release version, un-vetted by end users.

Now the fact that the did change the first example does give hope, but the new Import and Export dialogues being given such prominence over work spaces does worry me. Especially since so much of the weirdness of the new Export Dialogue doesn’t seem to have changed since it first hit the beta.

Anyway I am just thinking out loud here as I like to do here. You be the judge.

Adobe updated Premiere Pro to 2022, October 2021 or version 22 at Adobe Max this morning

Adobe has updated Premiere Pro as they go into the onine Adobe Max this morning. I have to say I much enjoy being able to see all of the classes online.

As for Adobe’s new features.

*We get unified version numbers across the video suite, so all compatible versions will now be version 22 (should’t they have just gone back to 1?)

*Speach to Text Improvements with improved accuracy for pop culture terminology and better formatting of dates and numbers

*Simplify Sequences has moved from Beta, I still think this could have been a great spot to add in unmerge, since merging audio clips is totally broken.

*Color management for H.264 and HEVC H.265, WHICH IS HUGE! You can now include correct color space metadata on exports, like DaVinci has allowed you to do for a while. So people on Macs should actually see what your show will look like correctly.

*Improved 10 bit HEVC playback and improved M1 support (lets hope it includes M1 Pro and Max support)

•Color management for Sony XAVC-L-HDR

•A new colorized vectorscope

•Improved Histogram

•Lumetri curve refinements

•Restore trim selection in the timeline

•Improved Media relinking for Team Projects

•Improved Bars and Tone for both HDR and SDR.

•New GPU Acceleration for effects, Alpha Glow, Mirror, Reduce Interlace Flicker and strobe are GPU accelerated.

AND IN BETA

•REMIX powered by Adobe Sensei, to intelligently re-arrange songs so that music matches your video, instead of cuts and crossfades let it do it itself. I can’t wait to try this out.

•Auto Tone, better auto color in Lumetri, a good start point.

*Speech to Text on-device without the internet for faster results.

*Improvements for new Import Mode, which is good because it needs a whole lot of work.

Awesome, looking forward to trying it out.

After Effects Beta adds Composition Profiler to show what layers are slowing you down.

Adobe has added Composition Profiler to it’s beta of After Effects as it announced in it’s BETA Forum. You enable it by clicking the snail in the lower left of the timeline window and it will show render times for each layer so you can can see the render times for each layer and know which layer is slowing you down.

This is very cool. Just a great feature so you can quickly see what is slowing you down.

Adobe adds Simplify Sequence to Premiere Pro Beta, and this I will use

Adobe made the announcement in the beta forum in their communities.

Woohoo, something I never asked for but will certainly use. Just removing the disabled clips and empty tracks is very cool.

Now if only they could also un-merge clips (since merged clips break audio metadata so a mixer is basically unable to relink clips because their names and timecode change) and maybe flatten multi-cam as well, though you can already do that.

I do love that Adobe all the suddens seems to adding new features at a prodigious rate, but I just hope they will still go back and fix what is broken and has been for a long time.

Adobe has updated After Effects to Version 18.4

So adobe updated After Effects to version 18.4. The July 2021 update has the following features:

Improved Default Property naming in Essential Graphics Panel.

Support for MKV Files.

Automatic default audio device switching on Windows.

And it looks like Multi-Frame Rendering has remained in the beta for the moment.

Nothing too monumental here, unlike the Premiere Pro update today.

Woohoo, the negative press worked, Engadget is reporting that Apple has returned the tab bar to Safari in the latest macOS Monterey Beta

Cherry Lynn Low at Engadget is reporting on the latest Beta of macOS Monterey which returns the tab bar to Safari.

And it is on by default, though you can return to the new method if you want to (but why would you). She is also reporting that the tab bar will make a return on iPad OS 15 in a future beta.

I had posted about this and was using it in Safari Technology Preview in Big Sur. A new version hasn’t been released, but I will take a look at it once it comes out, to see if it is improved. Now if only Apple would add the option of tree style tabs, ha one can only dream.

The new Import and Export workflows in Premiere Pro Beta

Scott Simmons at the ProVideoCoalition has a great article on the new import and export workflows that are being premiered in the latest Adobe Premiere Pro Betas. As Scott says these look like dumbed down versions of software for new users, but as long as they don’t supplant the old ways of doing things, and they keep adding features like projects and don’t mess with the timeline too much I am OK with new low end features too.

Adobe also has a Page up on the new features.

The New Export Window is cleaner and takes up the full screen automatically

One problem with the whole screen thing, is that it is completely taking over the Premiere Pro interface, and my automatic response was to go to the red button on the top left to close the window, which closes the whole program. To close the export panel you have to go to the EXIT button on the bottom left. Which the hell knows about?

See the Exit button on the bottom left corner.

Honestly I kind of see where they are going here, as the export instead of a window is now basically a workspace, but if that is the case treat it like a workspace and have it with the workspaces (at the top of the list) and to exit it you go back to your workspace. It is going to take me a bit to break me of closing it as a window if I need to.

Or they realized and put an exit in because might not realize that you leave by going to Edit instead of export, but this makes the edit workspaces a second tier (since you have to click twice to access and select them now, and they are only within the edit interface and not within the export interface. And why the hell is the Exit button on the bottom right of the Import dialogue and left of the Export dialogue?

A single unified Workspaces would make much more sense to me instead of 2 tiers, and it is 2 tiers as the workspaces have now been moved to their own button, and in both Import and Exit they are greyed out.

Greyed out Workspaces

And the default Export Settings is so much less pro now, being renamed to destinations. Well OK you can include upload settings, but it is not something a pro will normally use.

The Default Export Settings

All these “Destinations” are so web oriiented, how about some master settings, or at least export full resolution timeline at it’s settings (which should be the top setting). Honestly I never use an automatic upload. Anything that is for mastering needs to be exported then watched then uploaded anyway, so having all these “destinations” is completely useless to me. And how about a Frame.io destination which could be a bit useful at least, but still should be watched before uploading.

Now it is easy enough to add new ones, based on the settings you make with the media file settings.

New Media File Destination added to the list.

And as for getting to the compression settings, everything is harder to get to now, taking multiple clicks to do what could be opened by one before.

I have to click more and scroll to see more settings
Once I have clicked more

And you cannot type in a number in the bitrate, only use the slider to set bit rate. No thank you, I need to be able to type in a bitrate as I used to be able to. (UPDATE: in the forums they have said they are working on this).

I am really not sure about the new header bar, and it’s hiding the workspaces in favor of Import/Edit/Export which becomes a new tier of workspaces, and ones that I don’t use as much as my edit workspaces on a day to day basis.

Going to be interesting to see how Adobe makes it standard across apps, as I am assuming that will just mean video apps, but we shall see.

I can honestly say I don’t need the Import and Export all the time on my title bar, I would rather have quick access to my custom workspaces than have those. Many times I import most everything at the start then only need a graphic here and there so don’t need it on the title bar.

I think it should all be one workspace system or at least make Edit a drop down with your workspaces.

So now it is two clicks for me to change workspaces instead of 2. That is not an improvement.

You can discuss the new features at the Adobe Support Community, here is for the Header Bar, Import Workflow and Export Workflow. And the Export discussions says the layout is still being worked on, and they are going to add BACKGROUND RENDERING as well as the already added multiple outputs.

And I really wish Adobe would fix Merge Clips rather than adding new stuff.

Adobe Speach To Text Early Access was not working yesterday, and I realized how quickly I have become addicted to it, it makes Testimonials so much easier!

#SpeachtoText @AdobeVideo

This is what when I tried using the Transcribe sequence in Premiere Pro for a while yesterday. And I realized I don’t ever want to cut a testimonial without the transcription.

It is amazing I can start making selects on my first pass with the transcript. And my comprehension is better. Man this is a feature I can’t live without.

Unfortunately it looks like their 3rd party cloud infrastructure took a hit today.

I am pretty sure Adobe is going to have to expand their infrastructure because this is going to be a popular feature.

Adobe Speech To Text Early Access is absolutely amazing for editing testimonials

#SpeachtoText @AdobeVideo

So I applied to the Adobe Speech To Text Early Access program and was granted access, you can read about it and apply here.

I am editing testimonials and an assistant already cut down sequences so just the best bits are in a sequence.

All you have to do is go to the captions workspace and hit the Transcribe Sequence and it renders and uploads the audio track, and very quickly transcribes. I have had it take 3-7 minutes depending on length.

It then very quickly auto transcribes. And yes it has some errors, that are easily fixable. Basically I duplicate the sequence after transcription and make a cut version that I can cut out the pieces I want and cut them into another timeline. You can immediately jump around or search in the transcription, and just having the transcription follow along on the sequence helps my comprehension of what is being said.

This is truly life-changing! This is the most amazing new feature I have run across in an editing program.

And you can also export a txt file with the transcription though it doesn’t contain the timecode or the speakers, and I would love to see the ability to add in the timecode and to add the speakers for more than single speaker transcriptions. Currently the export txt is grayed out in Premiere Pro 2021, but works in the beta.

Transcriptions have always been helpful to find specific things in a long testimonial, but having them connected to the sequence where you can literally jump to an individual word is beyond amazing!
