So Lytro is breaking the internet today with it’s announcement of it dropping it’s unsuccessful consumer division and instead making an incredible Cinema Camera.

This camera sounds amazing. Sure it is only the start for this, as with a foot and a half wide sensor and a 755 megapixel sensor recording at up to 300 frames per second, the recording and post on this camera is going to be literally insane! And it is all connected to a giant rack of computers and storage. The thing is the ability to refocus and change the depth of field, create a stereo 3D image, and record a 3d Image of the scene to add in CG, or to create a perfect matte with any background, and add 3D without needing to motion track is amazing, it is a game changer for high end productions. Especially once this technology matures, and shrinks a bit in size and in price, this will change everything.

Lytro has put up a pre-order for their new SLR style Illum camera. It is $1499 with a $250 deposit to preorder.

It has a higher resolution 40 Megaray sensor than the previous Lytro camera, but will export a 4 MP 2D image. It has a 30-150mm equivelant lens with a constant f2 apperature through the zoom. And a 480 x 800 LCD. You can check out the specs at their site.
This is an exciting camera. I just can’t wait until they create a video camera with this tech!

PVC on Lytro being the new RAW

. It has a great interview with the creator of the Lytro, where he talks about the Technology, the future, and the possibility of video cameras in the future.
I would love a Lytro, this is amazing technology that will eventually change everything in shooting, though the quality will have to improve.
I honestly didn’t know that there were other cameras with Light Field technology in existence, even if they do cost huge amounts, or that Red was experimenting with it. That does excite me. As editor, the ability to change shots in post excited me a great deal, but that is a long way off at this point, we are just at the start of this technology right now in terms of storage and processing power.
The Pro Video Coalition has an excellent article on Lytro being the new RAW

Lytro Camera Hands On

Photo Rumors has some video of the newly announced Lytro Camera using Lightfield technology that allows you to refocus an image after you take it, or even make the image true 3D. The Lytro is an amazing new technology that has to be seen to be believed.

From the video it sounds like the image is 1080 by 1080 for now, but has an instant shutter, and turns on quickly. Check it out at their website. it is $399 or 8GB and $499 for 16GB. Very very cool!

And the CEO says that Video is on their roadmap. That will be unbelievable. I can’t wait.
