Does anyone else find that Media Encoder always freezes on a large project ingest in Premiere Pro?

I am setting up a project for a short film that my wife, wrote, shot and directed (I gaffed, key gripped and ACed) and decided to try ingest once again. Now I have already converted the iPhone footage to ProRES to get it 23.976 instead of variable frame rate, but since she is using it on an old computer decided to use the Proxy workflow and thought, why not try Ingest again.

I knew I shouldn’t but I thought I would try. Now I went for the ProRES Proxy LT codec, as I refuse to have any H.264 in my Porject, but of course halfway through compression Media Encoder locked up and I had to force quit. This of course messes up the whole INGEST thing and I ended up with some shots linked to the proxies and some linked to the original media and some without proxies at all.

You can easily re-attach proxies and re-attach full resolution media as well here.

Of course if the file names are the same, it is pretty easy to link between the files, but of course it didn’t do files in file name order, so I had to figure out which files had a proxy, and then start the proxy creation again.

In my whole career I don’t think I have every had Ingest work all the way without a crash. Now I should have tried the new Beta and the Ingest settings, but since my wife is editing on an old version of Premiere I decided against it.

And the fact that Media Encoder balks at any shot over 60 FPS, which they claim is the limit of Professional footage, it just won’t work. So any slow mo you will be using full resolution.

No Film School interviews Lauren Dellara a commercial editor who uses Adobe Premiere Pro

Head over to No Film School and check out this interview with Commercial Video Editor Lauren Dellara who is cutting on Adobe Premiere Pro.

Always great to see someone cutting something big with Premiere instead of AVID. I have grown to really love Premiere over either AVID or Final Cut Pro so I love seeing it used in commercial settings like this. Especially with Productions, the stability has improved so much.

Wacom has EOLed my Intuos Pro 4 and it makes question staying with Wacom

Now I get that Wacom is a hardware company and needs to keep making money off of me, but I can honestly say my Intuous Pro 4 PTK-540WL was the perfect Pen tablet for me. It is wireless or wired, and my favorite feature are the little LED screens that show what each shortcut button is. I don’t use the tablet all the time as I am a video editor, but when I am doing photoshop I love having the little LED’s to show what the shortcuts are set for, and after the 4 they removed this feature.

They new Medium Wacom Intuos Pro can be had for $299, and it is wireless and has the shortcut buttons, which the Intuos and One models do not have shortcuts buttons, which I have am very used to, and yes they have models down to $79.95, but if it doesn’t have the features I want, is it really worth it, especially when a HUION with 12 buttons and a zoom ring can be had for under $70. Sure it won’t be nearly as good, but at that price. Especially when I could also use my iPad Pro with sidecar.

And the worst part is they have just purposely removed the model from their latest software update, so if you remove everything Wacom and install an older version of the software you can get it to work in Big Sur, though not Monterey. They just removed it from their software. Honestly I would rather have the ability to pay a bit to support my old hardware so they are still making money off me. I mean I paid more to get the Pro wireless model to begin with, but the idea of spending so much money when I can either get a cheaper version from another company that will work fine, or just use my iPad if I need to do Sidecar and actually see what I am drawing, without having the pay to get a Pen Display.

Now WACOM’s are the best, I just think they are pricing themselves out of the market, especially when I can use the iPad Pro I already have.

Jan Kaiser info on iPhone 13 Cinematic Mode

Now I saw this twitter thread thanks to Scott Simmons at ProVideoCoalition and this post.

And here is Jan Kaiser’s eskocz channel on YouTube.

Now you need to look at the thread and see more than just the first post.

Wow, I am blown away that the depth map is only 320×180, and only works so close up.

I was also wondering why the Pro didn’t use Lidar to enhance the depth map, but while it shows allot more depth than the cinematic mode, it is also fluttery and noisy, so I can see that it would cause some serious issues in a depth map.

And the true depth on the front camera would be useless for a depth map.

Between the 1080 30p and low resolution depth map I think I am OK with skipping the iPhone 13 and seeing what the 14 will offer. The technology is impressive, but I want to see future generations.
