Mark Gurman in his PowerOn newsletter at Bloomberg reports that Apple has killed the M2 Extreme 4 core chip for the Apple Silicon MacPro

Mark Gurman’s report in his PowerOn newsletter at Bloomberg that Apple has killed the M2 Extreme, which would be 4 M2 chips linked together like the M1 Max is 2 M1 chips linked together.

This is awful news, as it means the MacPro won’t have much differentiation from the Mac Studio. It isn’t like they can add additional memory slots as that isn’t how memore works with Apple Silicon. It could have more hard drive slots, maybe some sort of pci expansion, but that seems doubtful because of the way the graphics work. So more Thunderbolt ports, that seems likely, though still Thunderbolt 4.

With only a M2 Max, why make a macpro? Especially when the Studio gets upgraded to the same chip. Allot of Thunderbolt 4 ports would be great as Thunderbolt 4 hubs aren’t cheap. Still with Apple prices will some hard drive slots and extra ports will this even make sense financially.

This is certainly worrying. It could also mean a wait till M3 for the MacPro and just do an M2 Mac Studio till then.

We will have to wait (probably a while) and see.

Blackmagic Design has released DaVinci Resolve for Apple Silicon iPad

It is available in the app store, and has a cut and color page.

It is free to use, but certain plugins require the Studio Version which costs $99.00.

DaVinci Resolve for iPad is optimized for the iPad Pro with M1 and M2 chips. Earlier and iPad models with memory limitations have limited functionality available.

I can’t wait to give this a try!

Knights of the Editing Table has updated Grave Robber with the ability to Unmerge!!!

I already think Excalibur is the single most must have plug in for efficiency in Premiere Pro. It is like having Launchbar for Mac, once you use it you will feel any system is broken without it.

And Grave Robber is another must have with it’s ability to un-nest nested or multicam sequences, but now it can un-merge clips and preserve all keyframes and effects! Why couldn’t adobe do this years ago? I mean seriously merge has been broken since day one, if someone else can make an unmerge, why can’t Adobe?

Pay the $15 and then check out Excalibur, you won’t be sorry!

Larry Jordan has reported some huge test results differences between AJA Test Lite and Blackmagic Disk Speed Test

Larry is reporting huge speed measurement differences on a Blackmagic Thunderblade, with Aja showing 44% less write speed and almost 22 % slower read speeds.

I decided to try it on my Thunderbay using softraid, and AJA also reads slower, though not as much.

That’s 6.7% slower on the write speed and 13.2% slower on read.

I am betting AJA is more accurate, but would certainly like to know for sure. I sure hope AJA isn’t boosting speed on it’s products, but they are engineers so I doubt it.

Wired on How to Make Autocorrect Work The Way You Want

Auto Correct drives me nuts and I have it turned off, so this article has how to do just that on Android or iOS.

I do wish their was a way to get into the dictionary and change things on iOS so you could stop some words from showing up, but apple doesn’t even let you control sync on bookmarks (why can’t I have an overwrite cloud setting, and if you can’t not mess up my bookmarks why would I want to sync my music collection?).

Extensis on Preparing for the End of PostScript Type 1 Fonts

Now I have been a regular user of Suitcase Fusion for years to manage fonts on my mac, and after 20 years I have accumulated a ton of fonts. And I honestly didn’t realize that PostScript fonts were losing support in Adobe as of January 2023. I have literally thousands of Postscript fonts and I used Connect Fonts (the current online version of what used to be Suitcase Fusion) to remove them from my font library. I kept a backup in case I run into someplace where I need one from an old project, but I don’t want them gumming up the works if they aren’t going to work in Adobe.

So here is a great article on the whole thing from Andrew Rhodes at Extensis.

And if you use Connect Fonts, it is very easy to find your soon to be outdated PostScript Fonts,
